While spending the summer with their grandparents on a remote farm in South Carolina, Ben Alderman and his sister, Casey, uncover a hidden world of magic; a world their grandmother is secretly visiting. It is a world where elves and dwarves are locked in mortal combat against a witch who is trying to free the last surviving wizard from exile. The witch has been defeated once before but with the combined power of the wizard, no one will be able to stand against them. Much to Ben's dismay, he learns that he is the one foretold in the ancient elfin prophecies to bring about the downfall of the witch and save this exciting new world from destruction.

The Thirteenth Unicorn The Ben Alderman Series (Audible Audio Edition) W D Newman Sonny Dufault William Dale Porter Books

The Thirteenth Unicorn is an ideal fantasy book, filled with magic, wizards, trolls, and what everyone would expect. *SPOILER* Ben and Casey discover a secret entrance to Camelot and experience exciting, mystical adventures with their grandma, three dwarves, a kingdom of elves, one last, precious unicorn and a handful of bad guys- snakers- that make the plot interesting. I was eager to see how the book would end, and what would happen to the Thirteenth Unicorn.
But I have to say that the beginning chapter, the Prologue, is extremely confusing at first, and I was tempted to stop reading and move on. Much later I realized it's a flashback, but it is very hard to grasp what is going on in the beginning. Fantasy isn't exactly my favorite kind of genre either, I prefer action/mystery/spies. And there were a few moments where I skipped the pages to go to the more exciting parts, but all in all it's a good book.

The Thirteenth Unicorn The Ben Alderman Series (Audible Audio Edition) W D Newman Sonny Dufault William Dale Porter Books Reviews

Great fun read that can appeal to all ages of readers! I really enjoy books with this kind of vibe to them. They let you know that the world around you is still magical place to be in. This is a great start to a series of books. I look forward to reading the next installment. Here are my thoughts

Ben Alderman and his sister Casey have been living without their mother Carol for the last two years because she's been in a coma. Ben and Casey along with their father Charles regularly visit Carol to tell her all about their lives. Charles has to leave the kids for the summer with his parents George and Louise because his job has him going out of state to oversee a project. The kids love visiting their grandparents. Ben and Casey learn that there are new neighbors with children about their age named Meg and Joey. Ben spies his Grandmother Louise entering and leaving the bamboo patch as if it was the most naturally thing in the world. When Ben confronts his Grandmother Louise with this information, she's floored by Ben's admission and upset to think that Ben was spying on her. Louise promises to answer all of Ben's questions the following day. Ben gets his answers yet still curious about the Merlin Tree. Ben follows Louise into the Merlin Tree with Joey, Meg, anc Casey nothing could have prepared them for what would happen next. They meet Amos, who is shapeshifter that turns into a bear, and disappointed Louise. Little did they all know that what would happen next would change all of their lifes. Rumors about a sighting of an unicorn, witch, and snakers lead the group on their next adventure. What happens next? Is the unicorn real? What about the witch? Your answers to these questions and more are answered in The Thirteenth Unicorn.
One of thee BEST books I've read this year...or rather past few! Excellent! Truly a MUST read if you enjoy any type of fantasy! An edge of your seat, page turner! I dare you to try to put it down! For adults,.. You can bribe your kids into bed early just to get another chapter in! Kids of ALL ages will absolutely enjoy! Enchanting lands, beautiful characters you will come to care for, evil villains you'll want to jump in the pages to help defeat, wonderful plot... I could not get enough (and I'm 35yrs old!) Thank you for creating and sharing this extraordinary story! Looking forward to the next in this series!!!
I read a "rather harsh" review of this book and it actually aroused my curiosity. There were a few grammatical errors and spelling errors. My daughter teaches editing in a school of journalism on the university level. She would not enjoy the book. But I purchased this book to read with my grandchildren and found it to be very entertaining.
If you are looking for a fun book to read, and to just escape the realities of this life for awhile, I recommend the book.
It did take me a little while to get past some of the descriptive details of the scenery and characters.
I could care less if the author spelled John Deere tractor with the "e" at the end or not. Actually, he did both. So what? I knew what he meant.
Good book to read for grandparents and grand kids. Safe without a lot of Gore, etc.
It pains me to leave a negative review, but I must be honest. A couple chapters of this book was enough to make me put it down in dislike. Right from the start the writing was superficial, rushed, and sensationalized.

Beyond that, the grammar was very poor. The editor (if there was one, which I doubt) should be fired. The author confuses the usage of "then" and "than," and "there/their/they're," doesn't know how to use apostrophes, as well as displays frequent inconsistency in singularity and plurality. For example, "the horses' hooves" are mentioned after which "it trots down the road," leaving the reader to wonder how many horses there actually are; two elves are mentioned followed by a description of "its braids" when it should be "their braids." There are several instances of the author being unable to keep track of the plurality or singularity of subjects in sentences in only the first couple chapters. It is distracting and off-putting, preventing me from being able to enjoy the story.

Although this author may have some good ideas and creativity, much more development of writing style and knowledge of English language grammar is needed before I will be able to consider the writing readable and worth my time.
I don't know when or why I downloaded this book, but I decided to read it on a car trip. It was a fast, easy and fun read and made the miles go by. I would recommend it for especially for tween boys and grandmothers. It was interesting to see various prejudices and misconceptions that the different groupings had about each other vanish as they had to work together to survive. As a grandmother I would be interested in reading a prequel focused on how Grandma got into Camelot the first time and what happened. This is not a good book for budding herpetologists as the snake people are evil and embody all the negative stereotypes of snakes and then some. I have already downloaded the next book.
