Originally published in the New Yorker, this harrowing tale of reverse culture shock is a cult favorite among expats who wander abroad and are unprepared for the shock that awaits them upon return to the first world.
After three years in the bush, a Peace Corps Volunteer is evacuated from war-torn Sierra Leone and sent home to Omaha, Nebraska, where he attempts to celebrate his return in a steak house. What happens next is called reverse culture shock. G.K. Chesterton put it this way "The whole object of traveling abroad is not to set foot on foreign land; it is to set foot on one's own country as a foreign land when one returns."
By Richard Dooling, author of White Man's Grave, a novel.

This short story is beautifully written. It is poetic prose at its best with vivid imagery, striking observation, and an impressively well crafted story line. I highly recommend this text, and think every American, especially those who have never lived in a third world country, can benefit from reading it.. It reminded me very much a being a child living in the slums of Brazil and the intense shock I felt upon coming to America and seeing and experiencing such abundance.Product details

Bush Pigs A Short Story eBook Richard Dooling Reviews
Read this two decades ago when it first came out in Harper's (I think). Still good, brilliant story idea -- though I kept wondering what happened to the character's local maid/girlfriend, whether she escaped the advancing rebel army. Apparently he didn't wonder about it, he only mentions her in one sentence. Though he devotes a lot of scathing attention to his American girlfriend, her Prozac and her dog salon. Those frivolous Western females!
A finely honed short story, very enjoyable to read. Reverse culture shock in the extreme. It made me look for more Richard Dooling stories.
I heard Bush Pigs narrated on PBS radio back in perhaps 2003, I think. I was captivated by the verbal narrative and to read the short story some 9 years later it really came back to life for me.
Congratulations. You have stumbled upon Richard Dooling's Bush Pigs, the story of a young man's hallucinatory reintroduction to American life after three years in West Africa. Food plays a large part in this story, so you can consider it an inventive and flavorful h'ordeuvre for this author's more substantial entrees. Bon appetit.
I have experienced re-entry issues and am relieved that so far, have never had a meltdown this big! A good read. I like his writing style and will be looking up his books.
